Q+A with Triplet Mum Anna Emets

Incredibly, three sets of triplets have been born within our Multiples Auckland North community so far this year!

Anna Emets and her husband Glen welcomed fraternal triplets Roman, Reggie and Aria (pictured above) two months ago. They also have older children Adeline, James and Morella. Anna kindly found time to answer a few of our editor Natasha’s questions.
1. A huge congratulations to you and your family Anna. What was your first thought when you found out you were having triplets?

Thank you for this question. It was actually a huge shock. Auckland just came out from lockdown and I rushed to book my first scan. I was the only person allowed to be there unfortunately. The sonographer started the ultrasound and I saw two babies straight away. She confirmed that I had two babies and shortly after she stopped for a moment said, “oh wait there is another one.” The first thing I thought – ‘Ohh gosh our house is not big enough!’

2. What was your pregnancy journey like?

I was very lucky with my pregnancy. I made it to 35w+3d. I had no complications during the pregnancy. Aria needed CPAP as she had fluid in her lungs but the boys did not need any support. We spent 2.5 weeks in SCBU.

3. Whenever I get asked by new singleton parents “how on earth do you do two at once?”, it always makes me wonder how people manage with 3! What is helping to get you through at this early stage?

In the early days we had no support, the babies were discharged from the hospital and we had no idea how we would manage. My husband had to go back to work and I was already sleep-deprived from all the time I spent in SCBU. We found taking shifts worked for us. I would sleep in the evening until midnight. He was “on call “ all night. Sometimes he just slept on the floor because the babies were unsettled. We have all the bassinets in the living room so whoever needs sleep can go to the bedroom. Now, we have my mum staying with us and a nanny starting. I thought that I would not need anyone and I could do everything myself. Triplets proved me wrong I must say!

4. Has anything surprised you about the multiples journey so far?

We certainly were surprised to see how big the multiples community is and how much support we have received.

5. What were the best investments you made when you found out you were becoming a parent of multiples?

We love Babybjorn bouncy chairs, Snuggle Me loungers and I absolutely love my Boba wrap.

6. Do you have any advice to share with new parents of multiples?

Reach out for help. It’s incredibly hard to adjust to a new life and find balance. It’s so important not to feel alone. So many families have had to go through a similar journey and are able to share and support. Just remember you are not alone.
